Analysis of the effect of mobile terminal speed on WLAN/3G vertical handovers

Proceedings of IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, GLOBECOM '06, San Francisco, California, 27 november - 1 december, 2006.WLAN hot-spots are becoming widely spread. This, combined with the availability of new multi-mode terminals integrating heterogeneous technologies, opens new business opportunities for mobile operators. Scenarios in which 3G coverage is complemented by WLAN deployments are becoming available. Thus, true all-IP based networks are ready to offer a new variety of services across heterogeneous access. However, to achieve this, some aspects still need to be analyzed. In particular, the effect of the terminal speed on the detection and selection process of the preferred access network is not yet well understood. In fact, efficiency of vertical handovers depends on the appropriate configuration of mobile devices. In this paper we present a simulation study of handover performance between 3G and WLAN access networks showing the impact of mobile users’ speed. The mobile devices are based on the IEEE 802.21 cross layer architecture and use WLAN signal level thresholds as handover criteria. A novel algorithm to dynamically adjust terminals’ configuration is presented.Publicad

Continuous-time cascaded ΣΔ modulators for VDSL: A comparative study

    Get PDF
This paper describes new cascaded continuous-time ΣΔ modulators intended to cope with very high-rate digital subscriber line specifications, i.e 12-bit resolution within a 20-MHz signal bandwidth. These modulators have been synthesized using a new methodology that is based on the direct synthesis of the whole cascaded architecture in the continuous-time domain instead of using a discrete-to-continuous time transformation as has been done in previous approaches. This method allows to place the zeroes/poles of the loop-filter transfer function in an optimal way and to reduce the number of analog components, namely, transconductors and/or amplifiers, resistors, capacitors and digital-to-analog converters. This leads to more efficient topologies in terms of circuitry complexity, power consumption and robustness with respect to circuit non-idealities. A comparison study of the synthesized architectures is done considering their sensitivity to most critical circuit error mechanisms. Time-domain behavioral simulations are shown to validate the presented approach.Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia TEC2004-01752/MI

From the Top Down: Does Corruption Affect Performance?

Corruption, fraud, and unethical activities have emerged as significant obstacles to global economic, political, and social progress. Although many empirical studies have focused on country-level corruption metrics, this study is the first to utilize a substantial international dataset to assess the effects of illicit and unethical managerial practices on firm performance. Employing cross-sectional data, this research examines the influence of corruption on corporate outcomes. Our definition of corruption evaluates the degree to which managers engage in mismanagement, misconduct, or corrupt activities. The repercussions for corporate governance, especially concerning the process of appointing managers, are both crucial and strategic.Comment: 7 Page

A design tool for high-resolution high-frequency cascade continuous- time Σ∆ modulators

Event: Microtechnologies for the New Millennium, 2007, Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, SpainThis paper introduces a CAD methodology to assist the de signer in the implementation of continuous-time (CT) cas- cade Σ∆ modulators. The salient features of this methodology ar e: (a) flexible behavioral modeling for optimum accuracy- efficiency trade-offs at different stages of the top-down synthesis process; (b) direct synthesis in the continuous-time domain for minimum circuit complexity and sensitivity; a nd (c) mixed knowledge-based and optimization-based architec- tural exploration and specification transmission for enhanced circuit performance. The applicability of this methodology will be illustrated via the design of a 12 bit 20 MHz CT Σ∆ modulator in a 1.2V 130nm CMOS technology.

In this paper we analyse the roman funerary spaces, uses, and costumes in the country of Huelva (Spain). In this sense, this work is a fi rst and global study about roman cemetery and places where there are some types of tomb. For a best analysis, we have divided the funerary researchs in three groups: fi rst, urban cementery, second rural cemetery and fi nally something else related with fi sh factories (Cetariae).En este artículo se analizan los espacios, usos, y costumbres funerarias romanas en el ámbito de la provincia onubense.

The role of government policies for Italian firms during the COVID-19 crisis

    Get PDF
This paper aims to respond to this research question: “How effective have government incentives been in preserving firm profitability and growth during the COVID-19 crisis?”. We used a large, representative sample of Italian companies, which has produced a deeper study than the macro analyses provided by national statistics. Results shows that government policies alleviated the negative effects of the pandemic on troubled companies, but it was not enough to maintain the same financial health as firms that did not need this support. Small companies were the most adversely affected by the pandemic. We are grateful to two anonymous reviewers and Laura Ballester (Editor-in-Chief) for helpful comments and suggestions.
